Western Allies Agree 5G Security Guidelines, Warn of Outside Influence (reuters.com) 87

Global security officials agreed a set of proposals on Friday for future 5G networks, highlighting concerns about equipment supplied by vendors that might be subject to state influence. From a report: No suppliers were named, but the United States has been pressing allies to limit the role of Chinese telecom equipment makers such as Huawei over concerns their gear could be used by Beijing for spying. Huawei denies this. "The overall risk of influence on a supplier by a third country should be taken into account," participants at the conference in the Czech capital said in a non-binding statement released on the last day of the two-day gathering. Representatives from 30 European Union, NATO and countries such as the United States, Germany, Japan and Australia attended the meeting to hash out an outline of practices that could form a coordinated approach to shared security and policy measures.

FWIW, if the statement in the summary is an accurate translation, it could easily be applied to any company that could be subject to a NSA letter. There's no reason they should only consider China an actor who can act as a state to influence corporate designs.

Sinister secret backdoor found in networking gear perfect for government espionage: The Chinese are – oh no, wait, it's Cisco again [theregister.co.uk]

US tech giant Cisco has issued a free fix for software running on its Nexus 9000 series machines that can be exploited to log in as root and hijack the device for further mischief and eavesdropping. A miscreant just needs to be able to reach the vulnerable box via IPv6. It's due to a default SSH key pair hardcoded into the software...

It's one of 40-odd security patches Cisco emitted on Wednesday, fixing all sorts of holes from privilege escalation flaws to denial-of-service weaknesses in its products. And it's not the first time Cisco's had to patch over security shortcomings in its gear.

40 security patches by Cisco and the US and other West gov are losing their minds over the fact that Telnet was enabled in Huawei, home routers some 7 years ago?

Why not the routers that are all over the place? The routers the 5G traffic will go through? The routers the NSA has already been shown to have compromised?

Near every US base in a 5 eye nation.
The ability to track every worker at a US base in a 5 eye nation as they arrive, exit the base.
The bus, fight, drive to a base. The car, bus, flight, drive after work at the base. All staff with a smartphone just off base that then needs a network.
Their entire set of movements off base in a 5 eye nation.
Where they party, read, relax, shop, eat, do sport, attempt to socialize, who they are allowed to be friends with in the nation.

Cisco is the only company that is to be trust. Very secure!

  • As opposed to Cisco gear that is routinely compromised by the NSA when desired? This debate should not be about security, it should be about who we prefer spying on us, the Chinese or the USA.
  • Use equipment that is interoperable and use multiple vendors so can rip / replace if necessary. Huawei can help over reliance on other vendors and competition but likewise donâ(TM)t put in a large deployment of only Huawei. Supply chain security also important to ensure there are multiple capable vendors.
    • Networking gear handles a small number of functions and rarely gets new capabilities. With securiy simplicity is your friend. It should be possible to make our networks secure, if we spend the time and money to get it right. Given the national security concerns the 5 Eyes should do this.
  • the bugging of Merkel's telephone conversations ? If not then what use are they ?
