Storm Area 51 Festival Canceled Because It Was a 'Possible Humanitarian Disaster' (vice.com) 96

The organizers of the Storm Area 51 festival called "AlienStock" have canceled the event in the Nevada desert, citing a "possible humanitarian disaster" associated with having people show up unprepared in an area with few amenities and little water. From a report: "Due to the lack of infrastructure, poor planning, risk management, and blatant disregard for the safety of the expected 10,000+ AlienStock attendees, we decided to pull the plug on the festival," a message on AlienStock's website reads. AlienStock was set up by the Facebook meme page "Storm Area 51," and was planned for the weekend of September 20 near Rachel, Nevada. The local town has been actively warning people on its website not to come, noting that many local residents are armed and would be willing to defend their property.

    That was easy.

I mean, if Lower Duck Pond [slashdot.org] is a thing, why not create a Reddit Area 51 then invade it? Unfortunately, the obvious name is taken [reddit.com].

Aww man! And I just bought a bunch of popcorn to munch on while I watch the humanitarian disaster unfold! Seriously though, I was kind of interested to see how many people would actually show up to this "event." Would've been good people watching.
    • Not every UFO nut job loves music festivals. I'm sure the rest will try to storm the base.

Who else is disappointed that we don't get to see hundreds of thousands of dipshits die of thirst and heat and particle weapons in the Nevada desert?

It would have been a natural disaster caused by sheer stupidity and it would have been glorious. Think the Darwin Awards on a mass scale.

    • That's what they want you to think!

    • You want the dank stench of bodies, while I just want to show up with a trailer full of $5 water bottles. ;)

      • by dgatwood ( 11270 )

Nah. If you can only get $5 a bottle, it means you're jumping the gun. Wait until the second day, then show up with a trailer full of $15 water bottles.

The higher you set the price, the more you increase the likelihood that someone will justify to themselves relieving you of your stock without the benefit of payment, especially if there is a large number of people in need.

    • particle weapons? If by particle you mean copper jacketed lead particles pushed out of a metal tube by gunpowder then yes.

      • particle weapons?

Of course, particle weapons. You think them aliens are using six-shooters?

        • I think they'd use projectile weapons at short range, yes. I don't think hand held weapon could carry capacitor or battery holding enough energy to power any laser or plasma beam that would have immediate devastating effect against bags of water with proteins (e.g. carbon based life forms). I don't think a fusion generator could exist with that size, given power requirements. Chemical energy storage in explosives that can push projectile are best at that scale.

          • I think they'd use projectile weapons at short range, yes.

Dude, don't you read sci-fi? They've got antimatter guns and shit. They came all the way from Alpha goddamn Centauri. You don't think they've come up with a power source for their plasma guns that exceeds anything we've seen? They might have miniature black holes in them or some shit.

Anyway, they'd probably just blow up the humans' heads with psi energy, 'cause you know they got that.

That's so 20th century. Surely they have something more impressive, right?

    • by jwhyche ( 6192 )

You know, we don't always see eye to eye on everything but I like your thinking on this one.

    • The loss to humanity would have been incalculable.

Some of those "particle weapons" shoot particles that are .223 or .30 inches across.

Just because I'm a gun-grabbing lefty doesn't mean I can't enjoy watching Florida Man in his Infowars t-shirt get vaporized while marching onto a secret military base in the desert. You seem to have a very narrow view of people.

I hear the Clinton's have a secret child sex slave dungeon in the most remote point of Death Valley. Should totally storm it next July.

And bring a lot of alcohol to drink.

I'd call that a win-win. Can we wall it off once they all get there, just to be sure? Let the rest of us adults actually run the country?

... they would have found a way to fool GPS and every mapping app, and convinced both that the middle of the Area 51 facility was where the Burning Man festival was taking place... and then sat back and watched as a bunch of generally free-thinking folks well prepared to survive in the desert for a week descended on the locale en mass.

    Just a thought, really.

    • they would have found a way to fool GPS and every mapping app,

Whaaaaa ? Find a way to fool GPS AND every mapping app and instead of being multi-millionaires (possibly even legally), they decide to prank?

      Fair enough.

  • The reason they are giving for cancelling the event is not correct. the reason is definitely other than this.
