Google News Ends Digital Magazines and Refunds Active Subscriptions (cnet.com) 16
Google has begun sunsetting its print-replica magazine service. From a report: Paid Google Magazine users have reportedly begun receiving emails announcing that the service is shutting down. The email said that users won't be able to purchase new issues or renew magazine subscriptions via Google News, Android Police reported on Friday. The last subscription payment will be refunded within 30 days, the email said. The email said users will still be able to access previously-purchased issues in the Following or Favorites tab, depending on the app.

I gave up on google years ago when I spent time working to integrate it's telepresence service into my product. I know it is dumb to use a product that you do no pay for, and have no control over, but that is what we did. By the time we were actually going into production, Google had terminated the service.

Ask BlockBuster how that's working out for them. Oh wait, you can't; but my (albeit old) phone still has it available.
Best you can do w/o rooting is to disable it. It's still there taking up "hard disk" space, but at least it's not in memory and not cluttering up the application list.
