Google News Ends Digital Magazines and Refunds Active Subscriptions (cnet.com) 16

Google has begun sunsetting its print-replica magazine service. From a report: Paid Google Magazine users have reportedly begun receiving emails announcing that the service is shutting down. The email said that users won't be able to purchase new issues or renew magazine subscriptions via Google News, Android Police reported on Friday. The last subscription payment will be refunded within 30 days, the email said. The email said users will still be able to access previously-purchased issues in the Following or Favorites tab, depending on the app.

Google really is not a reliable partner for anyone who needs a long term service. It has completely given up on it's original mission, which is to provide consumer services, maybe at a loss, in exchange for the data gathering it does It has not updated or promoted Google Docs, and if it is not careful, MS may get it's auto together and actually produce a massively superior search engine. This will mean that Google is simply a advertising agency that collects data on end users without any other valid purpose. To see the danger of this, just look at how the credit rating agencies have been scrambling to create consumer facing products, often at no or low cost, to justify their existence.

I gave up on google years ago when I spent time working to integrate it's telepresence service into my product. I know it is dumb to use a product that you do no pay for, and have no control over, but that is what we did. By the time we were actually going into production, Google had terminated the service.

Why any business (with the possible exception of advertising) would rely on Google is beyond me.

Especially considering you are basically giving away your customers, your proprietary business practices and any business ideas, to a corporation known to steal ideas. I mean why the fuck would you give away your customers information for free, how stupid could you be, knowing full well Google is basically selling them to your competitors to advertise too, fucking targeted competitors ads at your customers, like how fucking stupid could you be. Apparently lots and lots of companies can be exactly that stupi

  • Another service cancelled. What's the over/under for how many services they're going to stop this year? And how many will they start this year and stop next year? You just can't rely on Google services.

Other than the preinstalled Android App on my phone that I can not delete I would not have even known this was a thing. Maybe now they will let me delete that one App without rooting all my phones first.
    • Lol, no, you'll be stuck with that dead icon... FOREVERRRRRRRR!!!!!1111111. Muahhaaahahhaahhahaahhahaaa!

That's not how this works. Now you'll still have the app on your phone just as a reminder of how stupid pre-installed, non-removable, software is, despite the fact that you couldn't even use it now if you wanted to!

Ask BlockBuster how that's working out for them. Oh wait, you can't; but my (albeit old) phone still has it available.

Best you can do w/o rooting is to disable it. It's still there taking up "hard disk" space, but at least it's not in memory and not cluttering up the application list.

Some people manage by the book, even though they don't know who wrote the book or even what book.
