Airbnb Blocks DC Reservations Around Inauguration (axios.com) 95

Airbnb said Wednesday it is canceling existing reservations and blocking new ones in the Washington, D.C., area during inauguration week as federal officials remain on alert for potential violence. Axios reports: Airbnb says the move is in response to requests from local, state and federal officials asking people not to travel to D.C. for President-elect Biden's inauguration. Guests whose reservations are canceled will receive refunds and Airbnb says it will reimburse hosts' lost earnings.

"We are aware of reports emerging yesterday afternoon regarding armed militias and known hate groups that are attempting to travel and disrupt the Inauguration," the company said in its announcement. Airbnb also said it has banned from its platform numerous individuals it has learned that are "either associated with known hate groups or otherwise involved in the criminal activity at the Capitol Building."

I don't understand why Air BnB let this become their problem.

Because Corporate America wants to make it very, very clear to Republicans what they think of a party that supports a fucking coup. Coup is bad for business. First thing fascists do when they come to power is seize businesses folks who did not support them wholeheartedly, to give to their supporters. They have shit-canned book deals, killed speaking engagements, stopped donations, and basically done everything in their power to help the few sane republicans realize, they need to stop this.

Given the level of support corporate America has shown conservatives in the past, I hope this helps you all understand what a clear red line you've crossed here. It's all fun and games until someone threatens the billionaires revenue stream.

And to be frank, an attempted coup is everyone's problem.

Also, word is the backers that funded all the lodging and transportation for the 1/6 rally have, understandably, said "y'all're on your own" on this one for people who still think it's a good idea to head to DC this weekend.

Because I am so sure the vast vast majority of people running airbnb rental properties in the widely left leaning Washington burbs are Republicans, and I am equally sure the vast majority of people wanting to attend Joe Bidens inauguration are Republicans - oh wait that is probably totally wrong.

        • by spun ( 1352 )

As long as it makes it more difficult for fascists to kill freedom loving Americans, I'm totally okay with it.

I lived in the DC 'burbs for the last 37 years before retiring last year. Yes, it is majority Dem, but still 40+ percent Republican.

      • Give the hyperbole a rest, will you? I would hardly call a bunch of rubes trespassing into the legislature a "coup." Who was going to be the self-appointed Senate leader? Buffalo Guy? A coup, a real coup, is almost always done by the higher levels of a nation's government or business [wikipedia.org], not by the plebes. Study some history, such as the attempted 1991 Soviet coup [britannica.com] or 20th century Argentina [wikipedia.org] before talking out your nether orifice.

If anybody is trying to pull off a coup, it's the Democrats given that they've trie

No, you're thinking of what your side did to Obama. Merrick Garland remembers. You cheat, we don't, that's just the facts.

          • by dcw3 ( 649211 )

While what McConnel did was wrong, Garland was never going to win the Senate vote anyway.

You cheat, we don't, that's just the facts.

            Now you're just being ignorant.

            • by spun ( 1352 )

Garland was a top pick by both sides. Back in the days when Republicans were not pure evil, they lauded him. So why do you think he was never going to win the nomination? For god's sake, it's supposed to be pro-forma.

As for cheating, yes, I count purging the voter rolls as cheating. Here, LMGTFY: https://www.google.com/search?... [google.com]

See, that's proven, unlike your side's baseless allegations, which keep getting thrown out of court. Point me to ONE proven case of voter fraud that is in the 100,00+ range, like t

I didn't say he wasn't qualified. But, all indications were that they were not going to give him the thumbs up. Mother Jones even had a list of those who said they wouldn't vote for him even before there was a hearing.

Listen, I'm willing to discuss any issue you please, but not if you want to blame everyone who didn't vote D, and claim I'm siding with evil. Trump was the first R nominee that I didn't vote for in over 40 years of voting (and I just voted for the D governor of my state). I'll be happy to

Democrats and Republicans both support corporatism and the military industrial complex. Both use wedge issues to rally their base, (abortion, guns, and identity politics) while ignoring their own bases policy preferences whenever those preferences butt up against the demands of the donor class. Medicare for All is fairly universally popular with voters. Lowering taxes on the rich is not. Guess which policy position gets bipartisan support?

The difference is that Democrats kneecap their left wing while Republ

What weapons, some pepper spray? The only non-rioter killed was a Capital Policeman who was hit with a fire extinguisher. Still not a coup attempt, thanks for playing.

        • I would hardly call a bunch of rubes trespassing into the legislature a "coup".

          Would you prefer "rebellion"?

    • Maybe they know better how many people would go (judging from the past, adjusted for COVID-19 tourist season).
    • The summary clearly says "Airbnb says it will reimburse hosts' lost earnings." If the renter wants to rent to the person without involving Airbnb, then they have that choice.
    • Probably because they don't want to be in any way responsible for further acts of sedition.

... "let's fuck all our customers that were already planning on going to the inauguration with days left.

We literally have 20k armed National Guard troops walking around DC right now, not just at government sites but on street corners. Now probably ain't the best time to go sight seeing in DC.

For the record, we didn't have DC locked down like this after 9/11.

  • there's some crazy ass shit going on in DC. There's no excuse to travel there unless you are in the 20,000 soldiers we just deployed to keep peace and prevent sedition or a traveling medical worker. Everyone else stay out and stay safe. Now is not the time to play tourist.

Yep. I am a 10 minute walk away from DC, I'm a Biden supporter, and I'm not going anywhere near there due to COVID.

Hell, I live in one of the contested states and I was tempted to take my wife into the city for her birthday this weekend, but her birthday in on Sunday the 17th. Not going anywhere near downtown that day.

  • I guess the guy that was planning to shoot Biden and then relax afterward at his Airbnb rental will just cancel his plans now.

Nah. Who am I kidding? Donald doesn't want that riff-raff in one of his hotels.

they've been talking about these threats to Biden's inauguration since at least September. First it was that they don't have enough support for people to show up and it'll be a MAGA rally, now its under attack and they need 20:1 troops to attendees. yet... not one person can find evidence of a group organizing?

but they must be, because everyone said so?

Have you been living in a bubble? They've been planning to attack the inauguration since it became clear that their attempts to keep people from voting weren't working, and they've been doing it out in the open. There were discussions on Facebook, Twitter, Parler, the Daily Stormer, 4Chan, 8Chan, conservative media comment pages, pretty much anywhere they can get other idiots to listen to them. They've been talking about their fearful leader's plan to expose the Satanic pedophile cannibals of the ruling

      • OK then..

Can you point me to a link? Because my search is revealing nothing other than a few loons. I'm especially interested in the. Gov pages calling for an attack
