Netflix Targets Net-Zero Carbon Footprint by End of 2022 (variety.com) 44

Netflix says it has a plan to hit net zero greenhouse gas emissions by the end of 2022, with a big part of the streaming giant's efforts aimed at operating more eco-friendly film and TV productions. From a report: The "Net Zero + Nature" plan was outlined Tuesday in a blog post by Emma Stewart, PhD, who joined Netflix as its first sustainability officer last fall. At Netflix, "we aspire to entertain the world," she wrote. "But that requires a habitable world to entertain." In 2020, Netflix estimates its carbon footprint was 1.13 million metric tons, down slightly from 1.31 million the year prior (mostly due to delayed content productions during the COVID-19 pandemic). Roughly 50% of that was generated by the physical production of Netflix films and series, including third-party projects licensed as Netflix-branded originals. Another 45% came from corporate operations (e.g. office space) and purchased goods (like marketing spend) and 5% was attributed to internet cloud providers like Amazon Web Services and Netflix's Open Connect content delivery network.

Netflix's Net Zero + Nature approach encompasses three steps: reducing emissions, aligning with the Paris Agreement's goal to limit global warming to 1.5C; investing in projects that prevent carbon from entering the atmosphere; and investing in projects that remove carbon. (Netflix says its goal of reaching net zero CO2 emissions is a higher standard than "carbon neutral," which doesn't require reductions in greenhouse gas emissions.) By 2030, Netflix is aiming to reduce direct and indirect greenhouse gas emissions (Scope 1 and 2 emissions) by 45%, in line with the guidance from the Science Based Targets Initiative, a partnership among CDP, the U.N. Global Compact, World Resources Institute (WRI) and the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF).

      Netflix is all crappy foreign films and social interest garbage now.

      • Foreign films are crap ? 90% or more of all netflix presentations today and for all time have always been crap. Its a running joke to find anything today or tens years ago worth watching. Instead of wataching ads, you watch a few minutes to find the film is complete garbage and move on.

          And 85% of those presentations are foreign films. Don't get me wrong I'm not knocking foreign TALENT Hollywood productions with a decent budget have often included all sorts of foreign classic tales, writers, actors, sets and so forth. The production value has dropped dramatically since they've been using foreign productions shot natively in languages other than English. They just aren't as good.

              I was speaking to production quality and the poor experience of having to watch via subtitles. Even crap movies produced by Hollywood look like professional productions.

              You aren't defending them but someone with mod points seems to have an axe to abuse.

              • im not rating the quality of the shows on netflix based on subtitle quality, im making a general statement about the quality of the story and whether they are worth watching. Since a lot of netflix shows are american, they dont have the subtitle handicap, and they are still crap, boring, unoriginal, not funny and a few other negatives.
      • I'm getting pretty sick of their dismissal of reality in favor of "diversity and inclusion". It seems like everything they do now has to have explicit gay content (LGBT is about 2% of the population, not 25%+), and god forbid the cast of a show set in 19th century London reflect the actual demographics of 19th century London. We were really enjoying Another Life, but the heavy-handed gender bullshit ruined it for us. I love Sherlock Holmes and supernatural mystery shows, but I'm not going to suspend disbe

          I don't know that the Obamas have anything to do with it but the rest of your post is certainly on point.

          Also, I put in the time to learn Esperanto but English succeeded where Esperanto failed. Just make movies in English and most of the world can watch them without need of subtitles. We don't have to go back to non-english international content to cater to 5 purists and the CCPs desire to only have to focus on manipulating information in their native language.

    It is impossible to hit net zero carbon emission. You know that switch you bought to route network traffic or that boom you bought for the set to help capture voice? They were manufactured in China under very positive carbon emission standards.
    • Carbon offsets are a thing. Combining them with deliberately buying low carbon and no carbon power (solar, wind, nuclear, etc.) can reduce one to a carbon neutral situation overall. .

        Did you stop reading my post after the first sentence? How are you going to force chip manufacturers in China to be carbon neutral? As long as your supply chain is not carbon neutral, you're not carbon neutral because you're contributing to the fossil fuel burning by purchasing from these companies.

        Note that I'm not condoning the companies whose products aren't carbon neutral. We're going to burn fossil fuels. We should just do as much as we can to offset, but not necessarily eliminate. What Netflix is

        • First, you fix your operations. Next you stop buying from suppliers that are not carbon neutral in their operations. One step at a time boy.
        • You don't force your supply chain to be carbon neutral. Instead you just estimate how much CO2 your supply chain is outputting and offset that yourself.
      • I missed it, when did Solar panels, Wind turbines, and Nuclear plants start growing on trees?

      Dont humans also count toward carbon? I mean how much carbon does a human give off in 12 hrs of moderate physical work?sounds like they plan to bribe their way out to appear net zero. True net zero would imply capturing as much as you put out right?

        It's estimated that on average each Australian produces 7.7 tonnes of carbon each year. So in order to offset this output, each person would need to plant at least 24 eucalypts per year and nurture them for many years to a circumference of one metre, estimates Dr Cathy Offord from the Botanic Gardens Trust.

  • If they really gave a damn about the environment then they wouldn't use an obfuscated software codec and would enable the use of hardware codecs. Hardware acceleration would radically reduce the amount of energy required to actually decode their streams.

    Alternatively, they could make a specialized codec chip and sell it at cost to enable even puny low-power MCUs to decode streams. However, this costs money and they don't give a fuck about the environment.

    This is greenwashing at best.

      That's not Netflix's doing, it's Hollywood. Hollywood allows two ways for you to stream movies to a device.

        Alas, they produce a HUGE amount of content which means they can set the terms of it's production and distribution. They decided wasting shitloads of electricity wasn't important.

      Neither is the "out-of-datacenter" network usage. Those are negative externalities, those never get counted.

You agree to go around and blow up cars that emit too much CO_2. Fast and cheap, and does not require the legislation that Biden is trying to pass to do the same thing.
