Arizona Is First State To Launch Drivers' License In Apple Wallet

Arizona residents can now add their drivers' license, or state ID, to Apple Wallet, which lets them use an iPhone, or Apple Watch, to check in at selected TSA checkpoints. Apple Insider reports: As Apple continues to discuss bringing digital drivers' licenses to US states, Arizona has become the first to take the system live for its residents. "We're thrilled to bring the first driver's license and state ID in Wallet to Arizona today," said Jennifer Bailey, Apple's vice president of Apple Pay and Apple Wallet, in a statement, " and provide Arizonans with an easy, secure, and private way to present their ID when traveling, through just a tap of their iPhone or Apple Watch." "We look forward to working with many more states and the TSA to bring IDs in Wallet to users across the US," she continued.

At launch, Wallet can be only be used at an unspecified number of TSA security checkpoints at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport. Apple also announced that the states of Colorado, Hawaii, Mississippi, Ohio, and the territory of Puerto Rico plan to bring the technology to its residents. This is in addition to seven other states that Apple previously announced.

It's not meant for interacting with police right now. It's mostly for interacting with the TSA or businesses. From the state's FAQ [azdot.gov] (emphasis added):

Does Mobile ID replace my physical, plastic driver license?
mID is voluntary to use and currently serves as a companion to your physical, plastic ID. Because it is a new technology -- Arizona is one of a handful of states leading the way in making this innovative technology widely available to the public -- you should continue to have your physical ID with you be

Any information uncovered as the result of an illegal search cannot ever be used in any investigation or prosecution. Implemented in AZ, but this has to somehow be magically recognized in every state. What if you are driving across the country with one of these "digital AZ licenses"? Will the police acknowledge it? Get ready for the silly stories!

Would be more concerned with trying to fly out of SkyHarbor without a license...great to leave, but when it comes time to fly back, you might just be SOL with TSA. But then again, when aren't you SOL with TSA?

Colorado has a pretty nice app called MyColorado. It is a legally accepted app for Apple and Android to store ID info in. You can put your license, COVID vaccination, car insurance, state parks pass and a few other documents into it. It works pretty nicely. Used it a lot when you had to show your vax document for going to shows and stuff.

Look for apps with Apple Wallet integration. The difference with Wallet integration is that your phone does not have to be fully unlocked in order to display wallet contents. If an app does not use Apple Wallet, you'd have to fully unlock the phone to run the app and display its contents. Also, wallet contents are live and can be updated by the app (e.g. if your boarding time changes), an advantage over static pictures stored on the phone.

This is what Arizona should have done. It boggles the mind why they would use a proprietary system like Apple's instead of something platform independent.

Entered the US (at Phoenix airport) from Mexico last month. No line at immigration. Walked up to the officer. She said look at the camera. Two seconds later said "you can go through". Didn't even look at my passport. Creepy.

AZ Moble ID doesn't use Apple Wallet

TFA is announcing the ability to add AZ driver licenses to Apple Wallet. The AZ state app called Arizona Mobile ID does not use Apple Wallet. Mobile ID is available for both iPhone and Android users. Mobile ID was available before this announcement. iPhone owners have the option to use either app.

My Colorado app has Drivers License, Registrations, Vaccination, and has ability to put other documents in secured wallet.
Ive had it for 3 years now. Works great.
