MrBeast Overtakes PewDiePie as Most-Subscribed YouTuber (bbc.com) 55

MrBeast has ended PewDiePie's reign as the YouTuber with the most subscribers -- the first change at the top in almost 10 years. From a report: Swedish creator PewDiePie, whose real name is Felix Kjellberg, became the most-subscribed YouTuber in August 2013 with his gaming reaction videos. In 2019, he was the first person to attract 100 million subscribers. But the philanthropy of MrBeast, really called Jimmy Donaldson, gained him his 112 millionth subscriber this month. Although YouTube does not show the exact numbers, that pushed him above PewDiePie's 111 million.

MrBeast is known for videos featuring huge cash giveaways and prizes, as well as charity work. In 2021, he launched a separate philanthropy-themed YouTube channel, which itself has more than 10 million subscribers, and he has a licensed charity that functions as a food bank to feed communities across the US. He and fellow YouTuber Mark Rober organised international collaborative fundraisers TeamSeas and TeamTrees, which focus on environmental issues - the latter raising more than $24m to plant 20 million trees worldwide. And PewDiePie himself donated almost $70,000 to the TeamTrees project.

What I took away from this is that a guy who dabbles in nazi rhetoric isn't #1 any more, and that's a good thing.

        • He's number 2. Also, how do you only "dabble in nazi rhetoric"?

          • Like this:

            https://nyulocal.com/pewdiepie... [nyulocal.com]

            • So, according to that nonsensical article, Mr. Kjellberg is definitely not in any way a "nazi" or a racist (the article author explicitly says exactly that), but as some of his millions of subscribers MAY hold such views, he is "nazi-adjacent." Right. Got it.

In that case, you as a Slashdot member are certainly also "nazi-adjacent." Should you be worried and perhaps ashamed? Fortunately no, as the entire newspeak term is vacuous and only exists to smear someone. You're welcome.

              • The difference is that I haven't said a bunch of stuff that excites and emboldens nazis and caused a bunch of them to mark me as a friend, to the point that they make up a signifcant fraction of my fans and even affect my actions in turn through their feedback. That's similarly what makes PewDiePie more nazi-adjacent than some leftist Youtuber who doesn't have a bunch of nazi fans.

                • Can you point out what exactly did he said by " a bunch of stuff that excites and emboldens naz1s ", to "caused a bunch of them to mark [him] as a friend", instead of just random naz1 just liking the same fastfood brand or Movie as you do due to the your favourite brand/Movie's popularity?

how many remember that they are subscribed?

YouTube is unbelievably aggressive about culling bot subscribers, to the point that they've adjusted the algorithm to cull idle humans as if they were bots. It's a very common complaint in the lower tiers of channels.

      • Actually I do. I find it incredibly interesting that on a streaming platform a single player has retained the lead in subscribers for that incredible length of time.

I find this story fascinating while not giving a shit about either streamer.

Do you go around looking for things you're not interested in just to post that you don't care? If so you really need a better hobby.

      • Can someone explain to me why there is even an emphasis on subscribers? Surely minutes of video served per channel is a more useful metric for monetisation?

I get subscribing links a viewer to a person, but google already basically has that via stuff like IP address and cookies.
    • ....And "Baby Shark" is still the most viewed movie, by far.

    • More reasons why I would never want to live forever. Idiocracy is now.

    • My question is, who? Never heard of him/her/it/whatever. I only by chance heard of the pie, and that was not something I even cared about.

Obviously, neither of these two are important people we should be concerned with.

      • They are important in that they are influential, but for almost no other reason really. MrBeast is interesting to me in that he gives a lot of stuff away to people, he's not just hoarding all of his fan-derived wealth. That's much of how he came to prominence. But I don't watch either of these guys, and I'm not suggesting that you should either. In case anyone cares, even though that seems unlikely, I watch a little bit of Forgotten Weapons, a little bit of Notarubicon Productions, a whole bunch of liberal

        • I also watch Forgotten Weapons, the complete lack of political discussion is awesome. A lot of righties even claim Ian is a liberal, which I don't think he is.

          • If I had to guess I would guess slightly to moderately right of center, and I do have to guess which is awesome. Notarubicon is somewhat more transparent (he puts up conservative decorations or wears conservative tee shirts on occasion, but never seems to go the other way) but he doesn't really make too much political commentary so I can bear it. Plus, he's moderately funny, which helps.

Try Breaking Points [youtube.com], they are least bad of liberal punditry.

Just because YOU'VE never heard of someone doesn't mean they aren't well-known.

I could not name a single UFC or NFL star. Millions of people can, though.

My teen kids know all about these YouTube stars.

      • He keeps turning up in my recommendations list, always with MrBeast's face gaping moronically at whatever piece of clickbait he's discovered today. Always irritates the hell out of me.

      • I looked him up on Wikipedia and he seems to do the kind of crap you'd see on light British TV back in the day. Like that stuff from Noel's House Party with Mr blobby. Basically skits and stunts. I'm sure there's an American TV equivalent but I only know about the British ones because YouTube Kim justice covered them when you covered Mr blobby

I think MrBeast "contribution" is notable for deriving a formula for industrial production of clickbait video content. If anything, by over-saturating the market, he could be credited with pending demise of the genre. Just like we no longer see much in a way of "That one weird trick they don't want you to know" articles that plagued Internet during 2000s, I suspect there won't be a market for "surprised look, slack jawed expression" videos in the near future.

He's also showing that "home made content" still has a chance on YouTube. It's amazing how he's kept a style of simple-looking even on his high-budget productions. Everything seems so cheap as if you could, with help of a few friends and some time, do it yourself. Youtube has been gaming the algorithm against Pewdiepie or whatever his name is for years.

Can't find and won't bother searching the video showing the results of the same search giving pewdiepie high recommendations everywhere but the US/

So the big question is why has Youtube has been gaming the algorithm in favour of Pewdiepie outside the US?

  • I understand why people might be attracted to these two people: Loud, obnoxious, and do random things with lots of charisma but mostly done without any actual practical purpose in life. That type of behavior got a certain person elected as President of the U.S. at one point in the last decade.

I prefer people who "Speak software but carry a big compiler."

  • People love their lotteries, these are just paid for by advertising. Such giveaways for ratings are (were?) also common in radio, but strangely not so much in TV.

  • YouTube clearly chooses these people for their own, inscrutable reasons.
    • You've clearly never watched a MrBeast video. He spends quite literally millions of dollars producing videos and gives away more money than pretty much any reality show on network television show ever has. He has perfected creating engaging titles, captions, and videos. There are other videos on YouTube that analyze how his videos are constructed to achieve this.

His content is definitely targeted more towards children but I think you're confusing the fact that you are not interested in his content with lack

I argue that he has not perfected the art of engaging content. My proof is that I am not engaged by his content.
