UK Says Russia Targeted Officials in Email-Hacking Campaign (bloomberg.com) 41

The UK accused Russia's main intelligence agency of seeking to hack the emails of British politicians and officials in an attempt to interfere in its democratic processes. From a report: "They have been targeting high-profile individuals and entities with a clear intent: using information they obtained to meddle in British politics," Foreign Office minister Leo Docherty told the House of Commons on Thursday. The intrusions include targeting personal email accounts and impersonation attempts against universities and media organizations, according to Docherty. Civil servants and journalists have also been targeted by Russia's Federal Security Service, known as the FSB, he said.

In November, the UK's National Cyber Security Centre warned that Russian and other state-sponsored hackers posed an "enduring and significant threat" to the country. The agency said that Russia was one of the most prolific state actors in cybercrime, and had dedicated substantial resources to conducting hacking operations internationally.

  • If every political party in a multi-party democracy is raising concerns about a foreign government interfering, then I'd say you have something external to investigate, with concerns that are probably more factual than political.

"Because of the UK’s support for Ukraine we are in a state of ‘grey warfare’ with Russia; and the Russians will use every means at their disposal to attack British interests short of open conflict," Richard Dearlove, the former head of Britain's Secret Intelligence Service, or MI6, told Reuters.

Many of Cold River's targets were vocally critical of Russia and its war in Ukraine.

The Russians, when they can manage to suppress their uproarious and contemptuous laughter at the spectacle of the absurd little mongrel that is trying to bite their ankles, are taking reasonable precautions in case the UK government actually goes insane and attacks Russia.

The thing is, there is a mountain of evidence that Russians have interfered in UK politics over the last decade, not the least of which is Aaron Banks and the Leave campaign receiving loads of Russian money. Same all over Europe as far right causes from Victor Orban in Hungary to AfD in Germany, 5 Stars in Italy, Vox in Spain to National Front in France, all receiving assistance from Russian sources, all with the goal of destabilising the EU and Western Europe.

Fortunately most Europeans grew up with Russ

Of course, the flip side of this is that the UK and its allies will use every means at their disposal to attack Russian interests, short of open conflict.
        Its all just 'duh'
Obviously the USA, UK et.al. are conducting offensive cyber campaigns against the Russian political and governmental processes just as Russia is conducting these campaigns.

The Western countries should stop acting all surprised and butthurt over it.

    • Is the "Foreign Office minister" or the "UK National Cyber Security Centre" a political party?

      • Leo Docherty, the minister referred to, is a politician and a member of the current UK government. He is a Conservative MP.

(Note: the last statement is true only if the word "Conservative" is capitalised, as the name of the Conservative Party. No one in the current government is actually conservative in any sensible meaning of the word).

As to the "UK National Cyber Security Centre", it sounds like one of the continually expanding alphabet soup of government department, quangos ("Quasi-autonomous non-governm

Russia has been 0wning the UK for a long time. Brexit was their greatest triumph.

      • Brexit, just like orange clown, was a successful scam by Zuckerberg and Cambridge Analytica. $deity knows how many other elections and/or other nations they helped tip the balance.

You have to wonder, since 'Russia' did such an amazing job in Crimea in 2014 why did they fuck up so badly when they rolled into Ukraine proper?

            • That's a difficult one. Complacent? Assumption that the west doesn't care?

UK and USA would never EVER meddle in Russian politics. Not ever. No way.

  • Did the UK refute Theresa May's "It's Done" message to Tony Blinken moments after Nord Stream was blown up?

AIUI FSB was in her unsecured iPhone and Parliament sacked her rather than admit involvement in an ecoterrorist attack on a NATO ally's critical infrastructure.

No wonder they're trying to outlaw AfD.

      Seriously?

When even The Daily Mail debunks a conspiracy theory [dailymail.co.uk] you really need to move on.

For the too lazy too read the Russia apparently hacked Lizz Truss's phone over the summer while she was foreign secretary (this seems to be true). Kim Dotcom then claimed that they saw her text "It's done" to Bilken after the attack, and then Russia started parroting the claim.

For the too lazy to criticality think here's the problems with that narrative.

Of course not. It's obvious Russia blew-up their own pipe-line to deprive Europe of cheap gas. Even though all they needed to do was turn the tap off at their end. The down-side or up-side being that Europe now pays FOUR times the price for US gas.
