A New Google Maps Layer Shows Public Restrooms In NYC (theverge.com) 44
Google Maps has introduced a new layer to help individuals find public restrooms in New York City. The Verge reports: As part of a new program called "Ur in Luck," the city has introduced a Maps view dotted with 1,000 public restrooms across the five boroughs. Users can view the map on their phones and locate the closest restroom that's accessible to the public. "Everyone -- seniors, parents with kids, anyone enjoying the day outdoors, needs access to a public bathroom without having to buy anything or beg for a code," Deputy Mayor for Operations Meera Joshi said in a press release. The city will also build 46 new restrooms and renovate 36 existing locations over the next five years.

I've never been to NYC....but is it so different than anywhere else in the US, where if you're out and about, you pick some place, like McD's and just walk in and use their restroom?
I've never had a problem finding and using the restroom while out and about anywhere myself.....

It used to be easier, but after "Occupy Wall Street" even the tourist-friendly places relabeled their bathrooms as "employees only". What's left are public bathrooms in parks, that often close at 4 or 5pm. Being out-and-about in places likes Times Square... it's pretty hard to find a bathroom when you really really need one (definitely not a few-minute-walk from most corners of the city).
And yes, technically you can walk into any store, but most will claim they have no public facilities, or that it's employ

I believe my city has had an app or address list for this available for years. It's to provide a benefit to people like taxi drivers and delivery drivers, cops, postmen etc.

i'm not going to run with the "moms basement" trope although you are actively asking for it. let's just say that when you are abroad, availability of a restroom is one of the basic things you might need or want from a tool like maps. the question then becomes ... what took so long?
