Meta In Talks For $200 Billion AI Data Center Project (reuters.com) 17

An anonymous reader quotes a report from Reuters: Meta Platforms is in discussions to construct a new data center campus for its artificial intelligence projects, with potential costs exceeding $200 billion, The Information reported on Tuesday, citing people familiar with the matter. Meta executives have informed data center developers that the company is considering building the campus in states including Louisiana, Wyoming or Texas, with senior leaders having visited potential sites this month, the report said.

  • So far, few people choose to use any of Meta products other than the ones forced to the size of their big 3 social media platform (Whatsapp, instagram, and Facebook). Otherwise, their reputation for horrible privacy concerns so far has kept people away from their new products (even their twitter clone, which is thrown in users faces with tricky attempts to sign up for an account).

This isn't for any new products. This new datacenter is going to be used only to try to sort out how to make Zuckerberg more likable to the general public. He's spent a lot of time and effort trying to make that happen, but with enough AI behind it, he's almost certain to succeed this time!

    • You're right. Meta only has about 3.35 Billion Daily Active Users across those platforms.

    • Oh yeah, hardly anybody, just the 3.5 billon people who use Facebook Instagram and whatsapp.
  • but $200B is not a "normal big number". X.AI's "huge datacentres" being developed are single-digit billion dollars.

$200B is equivalent to $577 per American / $1569 per household. It's a LOT of money.

The $200B is only a press release number to make el Bunko in Oval Oriface happy; he gets to crow about some new unrealistic whizzy. FOX, the State media organization, will repeat it and add several more layers of x bullshit. Then el Bunko will pick that up and claim, "well, people are saying x"). And the Maggots will rejoice.

    • I am now normalizing the cost per month to cell phone service for the nation we are talking about. Yes 3rd world might go for $9/mo but that customer is not as big of ad target. You mean 5 months of cell phone service equivalent over 20 years.... $300 B with 600 M solid customers to market to is nothing if you can improve revenue capture fractionaly for years on end, exactly what wall street needs. I am expecting the AI chipset to settle into a 7 year plus lifetime in the next decade and the ROI mi
  • Trump promised yuge investment in data center building for AI. This means the companies involved are expected to publish press releases about this work for a few months and wait at least a year before letting the deals "fall through" and cancelling the projects due to "unforeseen circumstances". This lets Trump's promises fall completely out of the news cycle before the cancellations hit, minimizing political fallout.
  • A single (?) $200bn data center in Texas or Louisiana? Tornadoes, hurricanes (depending on precise location)? A single not so uncommon event can shred the whole operation, and because of this, nobody will want to insure this, either. Interesting, seems a bit dodgy. So Wyoming will be it, I suppose ... but I am applying common sense.

  • The epic photo of the Grand Tetons with the old barn will look magnificent with a Meta datacenter there, too. https://www.wyomingpublicmedia... [wyomingpublicmedia.org]
    • I do not know why people cannot spot the laws intended never to pass. This one is solely to figure out where this issue can be fundraised. Even the MAGA feds are unlikely to release lands without the normal DC process, because it much easier to take the haircut on the gay bullfrog research than deal with land issues that always take decades.
