DoorDash Makes $3.6 Billion Offer For Deliveroo (yahoo.com) 7

DoorDash has sent a proposal to buy the British meal delivery company Deliveroo for $3.6 billion. "The current offer marks the first formal approach since the last report in the summer," notes Reuters. From the report: The deal is expected to face no regulatory hurdles, as it provides DoorDash access to 10 new markets where it currently has no presence, creating a highly complementary footprint - other competitors might encounter more antitrust issues, the source said. Last year, Reuters reported DoorDash had shown interest in a takeover of Deliveroo, but a source said talks ended after disagreements on valuation.

A deal between the two firms would help DoorDash solidify its footprint in Europe, after the U.S. meal delivery group's 2021 purchase of Finland-based rival Wolt Enterprises in an all-stock deal valued at about $8 billion.

  • Multi-billion valuations for online food delivery platform are crazy. This is pets.com all over again.
  • And that was enough.
They add a markup to the food outlet's price, and a delivery fee on top.
Then, when it turns out that the order is wrong they are stunningly unhelpful.
    Offer $3.6B
    Value $ 9.99. Maybe.

  • I never understood why doordash settle for sub-par interface and quality of application than Uber by example, which is clearly a leader in that industry.

    Whether it is :
    - sale tax registration numbers (both) that aren't collected or offered an interface to be input like Uber does.
    - sale tax that aren't remitted to business owners.
    - the unfriendly shopping experience where it hard at checkout to review items quickly during multi orders.
    - the support by chat which is a real torture on a stupid cellphone small

  • Deliveroo is just another shitty zero-hour contract company that pays a pittance to the poor bastards cycling around picking up junk food for people too lazy to get it themselves, or make their own food. What I don't get is why people even use this service since it means up to a 20-30% markup on the cost of food plus delivery fees because the service gouges restaurants and they jack their prices up through the service.

Unfortunately it's still better than Just Eat.

Also I don't get why people get uppity at them charging a mark-up on the food. It used to be understood that was the cost of convenience. If you really don't like paying it, you've the choice of getting into your car, driving into the town centre, paying for parking, going to the eatery and getting the food yourself. All of which would take just as long, if not longer.

For me, the Deliveroo charge is 99p with a serivice charge of £99-2.00, so 2-3 quid
