YouTube Search Gets Its Own Version of Google's AI Overviews 8

Google is bringing its AI Overviews-like feature to YouTube in the form of an "AI-powered search results carousel." The Verge reports: As shown in a video, the search results carousel will show a big video clip up top, thumbnails to a selection of other relevant video clips directly under that, and an AI-generated bit of text responding to your query. To see a full video, tap on the big clip at the top of the carousel.

The feature is currently only accessible on iOS and Android and for videos in English and will be available to test until July 30th, per the YouTube experiments page. Additionally, only a "randomly selected number of Premium members" will have access to it, YouTube says in a support document.

I was thinking about signing up for premium to avoid all the AI slop in the ads, but if I end up facing it anyway with a premium sub I don't think I'll bother.

Why fund the EVIL? That's my take on YouTube in particular and all things google in general.

However mostly surprised at the lack of interest in the story. So much room for funny. We need more laughs these weeks.

It's almost impossible to find any video via youtube search. The results are never relevant to what you serach for, or tangentially related. Youtube's search is one of the worst on ay platform, which given it's run by google is pretty surprising.

But, the amount of video on there is so much that it's quite a tricky thing to do well I think. But there's clearly search manipulation going on as well becuase it also does not show certain videos when i even search for specific words that should show up.

    Ah well.

    • Google's initial search technology based on PageRank was what gave them their reputation as being genius at search. That was only part of the story, as they had an advantage in scalability. Basically, for years they had more pages in their index than all the other competitors combined.

But that's ancient history. They filled up their search algorithm with all sorts of heuristic junk like typographic features, instead of sticking with tried and true IR science (PageRank was an adaptation of citation counts)

    • Your search query is only a clue used to assist the algorithm in serving you content they want to promote

    • Just as ironic as the search in Google Play Store. Also made by Google, also one of the most useless search features I've ever used. Unless you know the exact title of the app you're looking for, down to the letter, you have very slim chances of finding anything.
