Notes to Slashdot Readers (important)

I've Been real busy lately. I started the Slashdot rewrite this weekend, and have some rough code and some HTML running on my machine at home under mod_perl. Its going pretty painlessly. But I really wanted to a minute to comment about a few FAQs on Slashdot. Hit the link below and read them: several of them are important.

What follows is a sort of sudo FAQ that hopefully will slow down some of my questions.

Don't Post Criticism On Slashdot to the Comments - I don't care if you criticize me. I'm used to it, but if you post it to the comments of some arbitrary article, often 15 comments in, not only am I unlikely to read it, but you're most likely off topic. Email me. Use the submit form. I want to hear the criticism, but if you post it in the comments of some article, its very unlikely that I'll read it since I can't keep up with all the good stuff you post.

"Slashdot Shouldn't Post X" - Sorry guys, but I decide what Slashdot should post. I sometimes miss, I certainly have made my share of mistakes, but if you have a problem with an article, email me about it, and I'll consider it. But the site is 'News for Nerds' which sometimes includes Windows, usually includes Linux, and sometimes might include TV, Star Wars or anything else that I decide is interesting enough to post.

"You focus on Linux to much" - I love Linux. That doesn't mean that I'm anti BSD or any other Unix, but Linux is where Unix is going, and it is where I enjoy being. I post other stuff when I think its important.

"Stop Bashing Microsoft" - *giggle* Allright I've slowed down on the raw MS Bashing, but when MS pulls a boner, it's important that the world knows, and I take great joy in sharing it.

"Stop Plugging Mugs, CD-Now, Requests for Hardware etc" - I'm not making any money here guys- I haven't even paid for our temporary server. but I am spending 15-20 hours a week maintaining this site. If I was working at McDonald's I'd make at least a hundred bucks a week. I got 3 free CDs thanks to people buying from CDNow (Thanks!) and had a hundred mug requests making sure I'll get a good grade on my ceramics project! It ain't exactly cash, but it really is nice to know that everyone appreciates what I'm doing here. Slashdot isn't paying for my beer, but if it can give me tunes to listen to while drinking it, or let me worry less about homework and give me more time to drink beer, then its doing a good thing.

Anyway thanks a lot guys. Big changes coming up- total rewrite of all the CGI in mod_perl, a faster server, new advertising, a geek bookstore, hopefully hardware review, and a couple of new web sites that are related to Slashdot. The future is looking rosey- you keep readin' and we'll keep writin'.
