We've updated the Jobs page to link through to Brain Power. These guys are relatively new company, but they're a Linux friendly operation (running on Linux and I even see Linux jobs in their engine) so I'm pretty pleased to be working with them (plus I think we get paid if you submit your resume, so go do that *grin*) I found 65 jobs searching for the word "Perl" so they've got something right. Other Slashdot Updates: If those "X Replies Below Threshold" links in the comments annoy you, I've added an option to turn them off from the user preferences. I've got a few more odds and ends to work on with comments, then I'll let the code settle down for a couple days and starting work on the new moderation stuff. Brace yourself.

  • Expect one positive response for about every 10-20 resumes you send out. This is normal (and, yes, annoying). Also, don't be afraid to submit resumes for positions that you are not quit qualified for. Companies often post their wish list and settle for less. Other times, there are more junior positions that are not advertised.

    Btw, with regards to Dice, Dice is a good way to attract the attention of headhunters but headhunters are not always useful for entry level people. www.monster.com is better, try going to the monster.com for your state (e.g. ny.monster.com for new york, me.monster.com for maine, etc). Another good way to find job openings is to look on web pages for companies in your area. www.bigyellow.com can be useful for finding out which companies are in your area.

    And if all else fails, join an organised crime syndicate ;-).

  • DICE is the best. in my expirience. The only
    job board that actually does something for us
    contractors. I also love the area code search
    function.
  • I don't know if it would be possible but I think it would be nice if the main screen had "Y Comments (X below threshold). While (at least on the default settings) most messages are above the threshold it would certainly prove useful to those who have a high threshold - they will then be able to avoid topics with _no_ comments above their threshold and thus simultaneously save themselves time and reduce server load.

  • Having just completed a job search, let me give some advice. http://www.monster.com is a great site, and there are also separate monster sites for each state. I was looking for a job in Maine or New Hampshire, so I spent a lot of time at me.monster.com and nh.monster.com. I had 3-4 job interviews and a (really good) job offer come out of replying to posts on Monster (and I'm still fairly entry level, only 6-7 months full-time experience), so I would highly recommend it.

  • This is really funny. I searched for "Java" and checked that little visa box and as a result I get some 22 job offerings (of only 24 at all) in Redmond.

    Isnt speaking Java in that area seen as a criminal offence?

  • With all the new functions in the comments sections, why not add a little button that says: "Save this as you default preferences" This way we don't have to keep going back to the preferences page to change the default style?

  • Hey, CmdT: I don't mind the "X replies below threshold" thing, but occasionally I'll see "1 reply below threshold", which really seems like kind of a waste. If there's only one, it takes as much space to the header as it does to spit out that message.

    Otherwise, lovely, lovely work. :)

  • I'd like to apologize, the Perl errors were a result of my failing to update Rob on some changes I had made recently. Everything should be better now...

    Remember to go to BrainPower through SlashDot so that Rob et al get credit for your traffic... :)

  • I had this happen, too, and when I checked, my threshold had magically been reset to 0.

    www.dice.com is also pretty cool. You can enter a search like "linux and (c++ or perl) not (microsoft or nt or windows or iis)" to weed out all the hosers running M$ stuff. And I get over 100 matches too!

    Only problem is, I've sent my resume to about 10 jobs after reading about them on DICE, and NO ONE has replied! And I think I'm perfectly qualified for most of them.

  • My two-month-long job search has finally concluded, and I'm really happy about it. My new job looks like it will be a lot of fun, and I'm getting a pay increase and better benefits over my last job. Life is good :-)
